Apple as early as Monday is expected to announce its 2008 back-to-school promotion, which will encourage students to purchase a new Mac through some of the biggest incentives in the company's history, AppleInsider has learned.

Company senior vice president Ron Johnson stoked anticipation of the promo a few weeks ago while addressing some of his retail staff, people familiar with the matter say. Specifically, Johnson is said to have promised that this year's promo would be the biggest "ever" for Apple.

While it's unclear exactly what that means, speculation among those familiar with past promotions believe there's a possibility the Cupertino-based company will tie some of its touch-screen handhelds into the mix -- like the 8GB iPod touch.

Last year's promo offered teachers and students up to a $199 rebate when they purchased a qualifying Mac and either a video iPod or iPod nano at the same time of purchase.

The deal translated into a free 4GB iPod nano, which was then priced at $199. However, participants also had the option to apply the $199 rebate towards the purchase of a pricier 8GB iPod nano or video iPod. The iPhone, Apple TV and refurbished products were excluded from the deal.




In 2006, Apple offered a similar rebate for $179, or the then current cost of a 2GB iPod nano. In 2005 the deal was the same, but good towards a free iPod mini.

In terms of qualified Mac systems, Apple has always excluded the Mac mini from its back-to-school promotions due to its extremely low cost. However, all other Mac systems -- Mac Pro, MacBook, MacBook Pro, and iMac -- have been eligible.

This year, the MacBook Air is expected to join the roster of Macs acceptable for the promotion. Students and teachers will also get to apply their education discounts towards the deal.

On Tuesday, Apple will also be updating some of its retail store planograms, sources say.

2) NOVI MAC MINI

Are we going to see a refresh of the whole line?" Apple typically announces new products just before the holiday season, so it seems likely that we'll see something new or updated. What'll it be?



3) "KEY" PRODUKT?

During his quarterly financial results call, Apple's chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer revealed that the company will make a key "product transition" that cuts back on its profit margins to help shut out rivals.

A frequent point of discussion during the hour-long call, the mystery transition will drop Apple's gross margins from 34.8 percent in the spring quarter to just 31.5 percent in the July-to-September window in which the update takes place, ultimately settling at about 30 percent during Apple's fiscal 2009.

Oppenheimer is deliberately short on details, not wanting to pre-announce the product or allude to its nature, but explains that cost will be a driving factor.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company often introduces products to the market with new technology at a high price, according to the executive, but often seeks to drive the price lower over time. It never wants to create a profit margin so wide that it creates an "umbrella" for rivals that lets them safely undercut Apple's pricing and steal sales.

The new, unnamed product will continue to have "technologies and features that others can't match," according to the CFO.

While notions of what this transition entails are likely to become clearer soon, several product categories are just now reaching the ends of their typical cycles, with updated MacBooks, the Mac mini, and new iPods all due for refreshes or replacements in the near future. Apple is also still believed to be developing its multi-touch tablet but has slipped out little extra information beyond leaks near the start of 2008.

September 2009?

Sreča da imam septembra rojstni dan .
Pomoje so samo špekulacije, v mojem mnenju mislim, da bojo mogoče kaki novi ipodi prišli ven, ter mogoče macbooki.

Predvidevam da bo celotna serija prenosnikov dobila nove "srajčke", špekulira pa se tudi o redesignu iPod Toucha (upam da ne na kako iPhone varjanto)

Eh, ce bo enakih dimenzij, pa isti hardware, me ne zanima.
Jaz bi kaj 10" pa ultralahkega z vsaj takimi zmogljivostmi kot moj MB npr.

idealka - netbook z multitouch zaslonom. to bi bla bomba.

Žal ma Lenovova "igračka" slabost, ki se reče Windows Vista. Drugače je njihov hardware bil vedno super.

Mislim da nisi vredu prebral, namiguje se, da bi naj apple nehal uporabljati le INTEL cipovje, procesorje pa seveda se naprej... Procesor in cipovje sta dve razlicni stvari.

To je težko reči.
Intel oz. Amd sta najbolj uveljavljena proizvajalca procesorjev za širšo rabo. Kaj pa Via ali IBM?
Zna se zgoditi, da se bodo povezali še s kom drugim....

Po par letih Intel procesorjev, ne verjamme da bodos edaj spet menjali proizvajalca procesorjev, tudi ce ostane se vedno x86... AMD trenutno nima kvalitetnih procesorjev, ki bi bili konkurenca Intelu in apple sigurno ne bo sel na slabse..

Novi Mac mini bi me zanimal, ampak se ne strinjam z Applovo prodajno politiko, tako da ostajam še do nadalnjega na PC-ju z Visto.

Čakaš verjetno na mitičnega Mac-a z midi tower ohišjem, je tko? Jaz bi nad takim modelom bil zelo navdušen, ker je Mac Pro za domačo uporabo preveč, iMac pa ima svoje pomanjkljivosti s pomanjkanjem razširljivosti (all-in-one design pač)...

Kateri del applove prodajne politike pa te moti?

Jep, Apple je lep zgled, kako ovce sledijo pastirju. Ne razmišljajo, samo kupujejo staro tehnologijo po lanskih (eh, predlanskih) cenah.

Lep primer je pravzaprav cena Mac minija.

In tukaj zdaj cena nima nobene zveze MacOS X, ali pa z oblikovanjem ohišja.

Trenutni Mac mini (model z 2.0 GHz C2D-jem) se ne bi smel prodajati za več kot 400 €.

Če gledam cene on stran luže, so dejansko enake, le da se znak valute zamenja. To je zame nesprejemljivo, zaenkrat....
