Apple launching 22-inch touchscreen iMac this year?

By Tim Stevens posted Jan 18th 2010 6:58AM

Sure, those new Core i7, 27-inch iMacs are lovely things (when they're working), but there's something missing: the sense of touch. That's coming soon, according to a report published in the Chinese Commercial Times. The new 22-inch model is said to slot in between current 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs, will use a capacitive touchscreen provided by Sintek Photronic, and unsurprisingly will be built by Quanta. Beyond that, and a supposed release before the end of the year, we know nothing -- but maybe we'll learn more at a certain press event next week?

Apple Planning 22-Inch Touchscreen iMac for Later This Year?

In a brief note, DigiTimes points to a report [Google translation] from Taiwan's China Times claiming that Apple is preparing to launch a 22-inch touchscreen iMac in the second half of this year. Longtime manufacturing partner Quanta is among the companies expected to receive orders to build the new iMac.

The report notes that the popularity of "all-in-one" computers like the iMac is surging, with unit sales set to double in 2010 as other competitors such as Dell ramp up their offerings. In order to meet the challenge from these competitors, Apple will reportedly look to the touchscreen offering as continued means of differentiating itself.

Today's report also claims that Apple's highly-anticipated tablet will launch later this month, and will include a 9.7-inch screen.

Chinese newspaper claims 22-inch touchscreen iMac coming in 2010

A new report claims that Apple will ship a new version of its iMac all-in-one desktop this year with a 22-inch touchscreen panel display.

Citing the Chinese-language newspaper the Commercial Times, Taiwanese industry trade publication DigiTimes reported Monday that the 22-inch iMac would be in addition to the current 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs, which do not have touchscreen panels. Taiwan-based Sintek Photronic was said to supply the screen, while Quanta will allegedly handle the production of the hardware.

Via its Web site, Sintek currently offers touchscreen panels ranging in size from 2.8 inches to 12 inches. There are no 22-inch panels listed.

Though the Commercial Times is generally somewhat reliable when it comes to Apple-related rumors, the newspaper did report last year that Apple was building a netbook that would feature a touchscreen display. While it's possible the displays referenced in last year's report could be headed to Apple's long-rumored tablet, Apple has never produced a low-cost netbook.

In October, Apple refreshed its iMac desktop line with a new, glossy, LED-backlit screen. The new iMac line, starting at $1,199, ships with a wireless keyboard and the all-new multi-touch Magic Mouse.
